Understanding how different this language is from English is the first step toward success. Once you understand the differences, can identify what is most important, and take action toward your goal, you will be far ahead of the pack. The glaring differences are as follows:

*This language focuses on ideas rather than individual words.

*Chinese characters are the method by which you can express those ideas.

*You can only be understood when you use tones properly. (Tones are the "song" of the language).

*There are four tones to be mastered.

*After tones, PinYin will more than likely be the easiest way to learn the sounds.

Once you are aware of these concepts, you'll need to identify your purpose for learning. If you want to be able to speak, then focusing on tones and PinYin will be the key to your success! When you have mastered these, you can then move on to phrases and sentence structure.

Basic phrases will help you in acquiring the vocabulary you need in order to navigate through this language. The exciting fact is that Chinese vocabulary is much easier to learn and retain than English terms. That is because the names for objects are very intuitive because they are a combination of thoughts that help you understand the use of the object.

With essential phrases like "thank you" in Chinese and "you're welcome" in Chinese, you'll find phrases pretty easy to commit to memory. Next, vocabulary will become your building blocks to speaking the language, once you understand how to fit the block together, that is!



Getting Started: Unlocking the Mysteries of Chinese

Once you have tones, PinYin, vocabulary, and basic structure down, you'll be ready to discover the mysteries of this beautiful language! Even though this stage may be reaching in a year or two, it's still an incredibly rewarding aspect of learning!
