They have long been known for producing reliable, innovative and attractive cell phones with state-of-the-art technology built in.

After Samsung, Nokia is the world's biggest manufacturer of cell phones with revenues in excess of 38 billion euros. They have the history and integrity to trust. In terms of market share, they hold over one fifth of all sales of 'phones worldwide.

The town of Nokia near Tampere, Finland gave its name to this enduring company. It witnessed and took part in the industrial revolution, from humble roots as a rubber producer. Once electricity came along, the company undertook its first telecommunications forays in 1912 - very early on. It manufactured cables, telegraphic and telephone equipment. The product base was diverse, with televisions, computers and tyres being made at different times.

In the early 1990s, the company focused just on telecoms, leaving all the other consumer electronics products behind. For 14 years, they dominated the industry entirely. They were the major player in the development of GSM, enabling people to send not just their voices but also data over their cell phones. The ground-breaking 1100 model was introduced in 2003. More than 200 million models were sold. The company was leading the way, and growing more and more.

In the early Nineties, they became known outside of Finland. Throughout Europe, Asia and North and South America, the brand became the phone of choice. Even Russian leader Mikhail Gorbachev was photographed using one. The demand was such that logistics became tricky, but the company responded with a complete overhaul of operations that left them ahead of all their competitors. Their logistics remains the envy of the telecoms industry to this day.

In 2011, the company formed an alliance with the giant Microsoft. The mighty corporation now supplies all high end models with Windows capability. They are right up there with Androids in terms of technology, able to take on Apple iPhones and Samsung Galaxies. This partnership has proved mixed for the fortunes of Nokia, as some regions don't favour Windows. But there's little doubt that the combination of the brand and Microsoft, as they have the ingenuity to create incredible new technology.

The latest model coming from Nokia is the Lumia 800. This smartphone has sleek design, a great look and a big 3.7 inch display screen. The built-in camera has an eight megapixel resolution, and the phone's battery lasts more than 330 hours. The Lumia is a completely connected phone. You'll be able to surf the internet, directly access Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn; email, chat, SMS and more. This is far beyond a mere phone.
