Which is the Right IP Business Phone for Me?

By Saul Saresi

So you've made the (correct) decision for your business to go Voip, you've selected the best, ITPSA approved, service provider, and you're feeling pretty damn good about yourself (as you should be). But there is one thing you've overlooked; the one thing that in the world of analogue communication would not be an issue. How do you go about choosing the right IP business phone?

With so many IP phones to choose from on the market, how do you know which is the right phone for your requirement. You're boss is bound to seek your advice so you need to know what you're talking about or risk being made to look like a pleb. Well never fear, 'cus I am here, and this article will give you all the information you need to make the correct, informed decision.

There are three different types of phone available for your business. Desk phones, DECT phones and conference phones. Let's start with desk phones. These are the workhorses of the Voip world, where most tele-communicating time will be spent, so choosing the right one is critical. When looking, be sure to consider these makes first; Snom, Cisco, Aastra and Yealink.

Next to DECT phones. Or, if you'd prefer, Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications Phones, which are basically phones without a cord. Radical, I know, but bear with me. Much like their domesticated cousins, DECT phones allow you the freedom to waltz (or swan) around your office with total freedom from all of those pesky wires.

And the final category belongs to conference phones. Now, while a conference phone may not be the most suitable choice for day-to-day call, nothing says class and success like a conference phone. (Except for, maybe, a Rolls Royce, a private jet, a yacht or a mansion)

When it comes to desk phones, a new range bought out last year - the Aastra 6379i in particular - were the first to feature touch screen technology instead of the standard, old hat LCD display. The Aastra also comes fully equipped with a Bluetooth interface, allowing you to operate the phone hands-free should you so wish.

In the world of DECT communication, style is king. Although DECT phones have good functionality, the range of features is always going to come second to desk phones due to the size of DECT handsets. And when it comes to style - just as with range and variety - look no further than Siemens.

And there you have it. The world of Voip phones in one pocket-sized article. You now have all of the necessary information to make a wise and informed decision and choose the right phone for your business requirements; be it desk, DECT or even conference. But if you're one of those people who just cant make a decision without knowing every minutiae, you'd better get studying, son.
